Did you know July is Park and Recreation Month? This year's theme is "Build Together, Play Together". It's a reminder of the contributions park and recreation professionals, including full and part time staff as well as volunteers, make to improve the lives of the community we serve. The programs and events we create are essential to community health and well-being and cultivate lifelong friendships, memories and family bonds that make a lasting impact. Art in the Making! Today, our Summer Safari Campers at Seven Oaks Park had the incredible opportunity to work on a special public art project with renowned South Carolina artist, Bob Doster! Each camper traced a turtle onto a sheet of metal. Those who were brave enough to dive in further were suited up in safety gear and helped cut them out with some assistance from Bob! These handcrafted metal turtles will come together to form a larger turtle sculpture that will be installed along the new Saluda Shoals Riverwalk where it enters Saluda Shoals Park. This exciting project is made possible by the Saluda Shoals Foundation as part of an ongoing initiative to bring more public art to our parks. Bob Doster continues the fun tomorrow with the Summer Safari Campers at Crooked Creek Park, where they’ll work to finish cutting out the over 200 turtles needed to complete this one-of-a-kind sculpture! #PublicArt #BobDoster #SevenOaksPark #SaludaShoalsFoundation

Art in the Making Part Two! Today, our Summer Safari Campers at Crooked Creek Park had their turn to work on a special public art project with renowned South Carolina artist, Bob Doster! Each camper traced a turtle onto a sheet of metal and then those who wanted to, could suit up in safety gear and help Bob cut out the turtles! The kids traced and cut out around 250 turtles between the two parks. These handcrafted stainless steel turtles will go back to the workshop with Bob where they'll be polished and welded together to form a large turtle sculpture that will be installed along the new Saluda Shoals Riverwalk in Saluda Shoals Park. This exciting project is part of ICRC's ongoing initiative to bring more public art to our parks. Special thanks to the Saluda Shoals Foundation and the CW and Dorothy G.
